According to the Stats SA Census 2011 results, the municipality has an estimated population of 230 350 people with a total of 59 682 households and an average household size of 3.9. There are 30 wards in the municipality with an average size of 8000 people.

The population of Lepelle-Nkumpi has grown by 0.1, second fastest after Polokwane, during the last ten years after a sharp decline between 1996 and 2001 when its growth was slower than the rest in the District. The municipality is the second largest in the District, harbouring 18% of District population, whereas Polokwane Municipality is the biggest and constitutes about 50% of the District population.
